Magda Productions is thrilled to bring back to our stage, the East of West trio, who will play compositions from their freshly released debut album - Little Harbour, as well as a selection of new compositions.

After launching their debut album in September to a sold-out audience, East of West are back for a fully acoustic show in the heritage-listed Holy Trinity Hall in "The Valley".

East of West offer a captivating new take on the fusion between world music and jazz, playing original compositions with a focus on improvisation, inspired by the music of the Mediterranean and Balkans.

East of West's debut album Little Harbour is a rich collection of 13 of the band’s original compositions interwoven with improvisation (as can be heard on the title track, ‘Little Harbour’), using jazz forms and elements from the Middle-eastern/Mediterranean traditions of taqsim (melodic improvisation). The main sound of the album is grounded in the interplay between oud and double bass, spiced with a rhythmic tapestry of hand percussion, featuring instruments such as frame drums, darabuka and cajon.

Followers of Magda's rich performance oeuvre will remember East of West performing on Magda's stage in July 2017. And Goran helping celebrate the Paddington 2018 Festival on stage with MZAZA.

The Balkanics play high-energy music from the Balkans (especially Macedonia). The music is energetic, infectious and very danceable. As well as traditional tunes, many of them Gypsy or Roma in origin, their original compositions are inspired by many years of studying, playing and living these most vibrant of musical cultures. Featuring five accomplished musicians who have been playing together in different combinations for several decades, The Balkanics will intoxicate you, the hypnotic energy of their improvisations dragging you onto the dance floor. Cast away your worldly woes and be transported to a universe inhabited by extravagant rhythmic variation and catchy melodic invention.

The Balkanics include Anthony Pizzica (rezouki, tambura), Linsey Pollak (sax, gaida, clarini), Philip Griffin (electric bass, tambura), Ric Halstead (sax, flute) & Tunji Beier (drums). Between them they have performed in many varied ensembles (The Unusual Suspects, Makedonski Bop, Xenos, Okuta Percussion, Ross Daly’s Australian Labyrinth), performed with many international artists (Jimmy Witherspoon, Red Rodney, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Mick Taylor, Billy Cobham, Nitin Sawhney, Pece Atanasovski) and at venues and festivals throughout the world (WOMADelaide; WOMAD NZ; St Chartier Festival, France; Perth, Melbourne, Sydney & Adelaide Arts Festivals; Vector Arena, Auckland; Barbican Centre, London; Hong Kong Arts Festival; Montreal Jazz Festival)

"Among the plethora of bands playing Balkan and Gypsy music in Australia these days, one rarely encounters high-level musicianship so completely intertwined with sheer gusto as is the case with the Balkanics ” - John Shand - Sydney Morning Herald

ALL WELCOME... Armistice Day Commemoration - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 2019.

10.30am, Friends Meeting House, 10 Hampson St, Kelvin Grove.
Event follow here...
www.facebook.com/events/485053498765236/

This year we are being especially mindful of the First Nation peoples of this land, the Frontier Wars, the Stolen Generations and the Indigenous contribution to Australian wars overseas.

We are meeting in the spirit of humanity, in the hope of humanity, and for the future of our Mother Earth.

We will be acknowledging all our dead and injured from the frontier wars and the stolen generations.

Why commemorate "Armistice Day"? It was the day that the guns fell silent on the Western Front, and WW1 officially ended. The western world celebrated peace as a universal principle. With the war ending, nations mourned their dead collectively - and people called for an end to all wars, continuing a long-standing commitment by substantial numbers of people for a cessation of militarism. Armistice Day was born and was designated as “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated." In reflecting back on the 101 years since that first Armistice Day, it is time we faced our history and collectively make an Armistice here - with the First Nation Peoples of this land.

2019 is Magda's 4th Armistice Day Commemoration and the second jointly hosted with BrisWest, Paddington. [2016, 2017, 2018]

This year we are delighted to also combine with The Quakers (aka The Friends) in whose grounds we will meet. Apart from a 350-year history of active peacemaking, Quakers' commitment to social justice, care for others and the environment have always been unshakeable.

Recognizing the frontiers wars in S.E.Qld, here. And the power of our combined humanity, here.

Getting here: Please Note: Parking is difficult. There multiple bus routes. Please check the journey planner.

> At 10.20 a BrisWest bus will leave BrisWest, 132 LaTrobe Tce, Paddington. Please advise if you would like a lift and be at BrisWest by 10a.m. No charge.]

> If you are driving, please park on the street. Prospect Tce is much flatter!

> Our ceremony will be held in the Meeting House's rainforest - a collapsible chair and umbrella might be handy.

> After the Ceremony, we invite you to stay for refreshments. For catering, please RSVP by Thursday 7th Nov - if at all possible.

“Monique takes her years of music training and her brilliantly quick and creative mind and delivers a performance that is stunning to fans of any music genre. Her songs are intimate and soaring – both sonically and lyrically, and her stage presence is pure joy”.

Joe started playing violin at the age of seven and as a young teen, studied with Earl Maneein, a multi genre violinist whose projects include classical chamber music, jazz, bluegrass, and metal.

Joe was raised in a musical family that gave him constant exposure to American jazz, Celtic, rock, bluegrass, and classical performances, in a family band setting. These experiences fostered a love for performance in a wide variety of genres. ..... (more)

Also present will be Monique's sister, artist Ingrid Bartkowiak, who will be painting in response to the music. You are invited to experience and join the creativity and express yourself - while soaking up this beautiful and creative evening of music and art entwined.

Throw in Joe D'Esposito (The Railsplitters) and a full band lineup and you're in for a top night. This will be the finales of Monique and Joe's national tour. Don't miss their only Brisbane gig!
